I’m a professor in the Education Department at Hope College. I love my work – amazing students, some inspiring colleagues/friends…Each day I get to stand “on the shoulders of giants.” A pretty good gig!
My specific interests are in early literacy learning and teaching. I love to read and write. I hope that writing this blog will help me to move through the ups and downs of having cancer. I often find that getting my thoughts on “paper” help me to sort out my thinking. We’ll see. I’ve never had cancer before and some of the words I’d like to use to describe this experience might not be “appropriate.”
I have the good fortune to be married to an amazing woman – Theresa Reagan. We share our lives with our daughter Kelsey and our son Keenan. There is no prouder husband and father. They give me reason to be nearly every day. I don’t think it would be possible to love them more than I do.
I have one brother and five sisters whom I also love very much. Our parents were courageous people who immigrated to the United States when I was around 2 years old. Both have died in the last two years – most recently our mom who died last year in July. Our parents taught us to face life head on – both the good and bad. They had more than their share of both. I will use the lessons they taught me and the support of my siblings and their families to face this cancer. I can always count on them.
